Wednesday 15th May 2.30pm

Group 13 – Speaker Brian Gamble,
“Living with Dementia” Everyone very welcome.

What does it mean to describe Jesus as Christ, and why does it matter today?

Wednesday 15th May, 7.00 pm at Guiseley Methodist Church

Jonathan Clatworthy has co-edited a new book, What Christ? Whose Christ? New Options for Old Theories. Jonathan has lived in Guiseley with his wife Marguerite since 2020, and is a retired vicar, university chaplain and tutor in Theology and Ethics. His co-editor, Alan Race, is an interfaith specialist.

Traditional accounts of Christ, as in the Creeds, are usually based on church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries. Many Christians now find them unconvincing. Meanwhile Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and feminists are often attracted by what they know of Jesus but repelled by claims that the divinity of Christ makes Christianity the only true faith.

Come and hear Jonathan describe the book, ask your questions and share your thoughts with other people.

A message from Roger:
We’re heading towards Pentecost which this year falls on Sunday 19th May. Here is the chorus of a Pentecost hymn: Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove, teach us the truth and help us believe, show us the Saviour’s love. (Margaret Old, Singing the Faith no. 394) The Spirit is unseen; it is like a dove. Two apparently contradictory images but both are true. We cannot know what the Spirit looks like – yet the biblical image of the dove speaks so powerfully to us.
This Pentecost, like last year, the Circuit is organising a FaithFest event on the Sunday afternoon (3.30pm at Christchurch, Ilkley). There’ll be a variety of activities to choose from. Come along if you can but in any case, look out for visible signs of the invisible Spirit at work all around us

Forest Church

The second session of the season and the next Forest Church will be on Saturday 11th May at 3.00pm at the White House on Otley Chevin. Families and children are warmly welcomed as we gather to explore, celebrate, eat, worship, and make new friends. We are having some special times of gathering, wonder and worship and we would love to spread the message about this great event. Do consider telling families you know about it. Car parking is available at the top of the track by the White House.  This time we are looking at the joy, colour and wonder of flowers.

Breathe

The next meeting of Breathe: is on Wednesday 15th May at 7.30pm at Cornerstone Cafe, attached to Menston Methodist Church. This is a great opportunity to introduce people to the Christian faith in a gentle, non-threatening way. We are an open and inclusive community and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere where we can discuss, reflect, and hear people’s stories. Live music, great coffee and cake – real life clips and testimony. It’s Church – but not maybe as you know it!! Do see this as a good place to direct people who are a bit younger and have given up on traditional Church.

Circuit FaithFest

Our Circuit Service for Pentecost will be held on Sun 19th May at 3.30pm at Christchurch, Ilkley. This will be an opportunity for us to celebrate one of our major festivals together and last year we had a great turnout at this event, but this year we are hoping for even more!  The service will provide opportunity to engage in a number of different forms of worship in different parts of the building.

It will include refreshments and will finish by 5.30pm. This will be suitable for children and families too and there are lots of different things to engage with and experience – it should be a really wonderful event.  Our Chair of District Rev Kerry Tankard will also be with us for this afternoon offering input into the sessions and our worship.  Do come along to this mini festival.

Sunshine and Showers

A 6 week course will led by Rev. Cameron on Zoom on Tuesday evenings at 7pm.  Sunshine and Showers is a course about the paradoxes of prayer.

We shall explore: prayer as friendship; when prayer is hard; healing and prayer etc.  The dates we are meeting are: Tuesday 7 May, 14 May, 28 May, 4 June, 11 June & 18 June.  Email Cameron on thestirks@tiscali.co.uk or ring 01943 463258 for a link for the course

Mors Bag Sessions

On Tuesday 7th May from 10am – 12 noon and Monday 17th June from 7.00-9.00pm, Lucy Stirk will be hosting more Mors Bag sessions at Otley Methodist Church. During each session people will be invited to come along and sew up shopping bags that can then be given out to avoid use of plastic bags. The pattern is relatively easy – so come along all sewers and help us make a difference for the planet. If you have a sewing machine – do bring it along. If you haven’t no worries – you can help cut out and there may be a couple of machines spare. Please share with other sewers you know – and invite them along. Drinks and light eats will also be available. This is open to anyone.

Ascension Day
